Blend Architects was commissioned to provide RIBA Stage 5 services for a sensitive residential development comprising twelve two-bedroom and five one-bedroom apartments nestled within St Augustines Edgbaston Conservation Area, Birmingham.
The project offered a contemporary approach and style, which successfully references the character, form and massing of the surrounding vernacular. This is achieved through three feature gables that follow the same height, pitch and proportions of adjacent properties. A pastel-coloured red brick pays homage to the surrounding material palette, and a matching red mortar provides a modern contrast to the neighbouring Victorian dwellings.
Part of the development included the sensitive refurbishment of the existing property, which included the internal reconfiguration of the existing apartments, reinstatement of the existing brickwork and the formation of three new dormer windows.
